Hillside School is home to 327 students in Grades Pre-K-4, and 50 staff members each school day.

In an effort to educate the "whole child," our staff has developed new techniques in meeting the special instructional needs of all students while building student self esteem. Pupil motivation, enrichment and appreciation of all cultures and the development of the full potential of critical thinking are areas of concentration for our staff members.

At the Hillside School, in addition to educational programming, emphasis is placed on social growth through community involvement and commitment. Some of the worthwhile projects included, collecting food for a local food bank and Toys for Tots, and contributing to the Ronald McDonald House.

The Countdown Is On ... First Day Of School Is September 8 for 1-8; September 9 for Kindergarten ...
So here's what's happening between now and the start of school:
 
  • Elementary School Assignment Letters will be sent home via e-mail on Friday, August 28. If you do not receive your child's letter, please call your school office.
  • Hello Day for incoming 5th-graders at Hartford School will take place on Tuesday, September 1. Details were provided in assignment letters.
  • Bus passes went out last week, so you should be set. If not, please call our Transportation Office at 856-778-6905.
  • Student user names and passwords: We've had a few calls about this. All student user names and passwords continue from year to year, so students should continue to use the same user name and password as last year to access their Google accounts. EXCEPT, that the passwords of all fifth-graders will be changed. Fifth-grade students will get their new passwords on the first day of school.
  • The LunchTime Portal will open on Monday, August 31. Parents may begin making deposits into their child's lunch account at that time.
  • Transportation Reminder: If your child will be picked-up or dropped off at a location other than your home, make sure you complete a Day Care-Babysitting Bus Stop Request Form by August 28. Those requests submitted after August 28 will not be honored for the first two weeks of school. Requests received after August 28 will not go into effect until September 15.

All Parents: Important Notice About Next Year's Placement Letters

"We're away and can't get to the mail ... Can you tell me my child's teacher?"
"The mail has been running late in our area and everyone else has their assignment letter. Can you give me the information by phone?"
"It's really sort of crazy in this day and age to have to wait for a letter to arrive ..."
 
Each August, our phones ring steadily with comments like those above. And we get it. There's really no reason we should not begin the process of class assignment notification via e-mail. That is, unless you have not supplied us with a working e-mail for each of your children. Or, obviously if you have no access to Internet or e-mail.
 
So, this year, all class assignment letters will come to you by e-mail. 
 
Here's the schedule:
  • Harrington House Announcement e-mail was sent on August 17.
  • Hartford Team Assignment e-mail was sent on August 24. Fifth-Graders: You'll need this to know which Hartford Hello Day session to attend on September 1.
  • All Elementary e-mails were sent on August 28.
If you have no access to Internet or e-mail, please notify your school office that you must continue to receive assignment letters by mail.

A Letter To The Community From The Board of Education

Dear Parents and Community Members:
 
By now, you may be aware that Mount Laurel Superintendent of Schools Dr. Antoinette Rath has submitted her intention to retire as of September 1, 2015. I want to assure you that the board of education is acting expeditiously in providing district leadership prior to the start of the new school year.
 
At our July 28 regular meeting, board members accepted Dr. Rath’s letter of retirement with regret and appointed Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sharon Vitella as Interim Superintendent of the Mount Laurel Schools until such time as a permanent superintendent is in place. Dr. Vitella holds a Doctorate Degree from Nova Southeastern University and a Master of Science from Gwynedd-Mercy College. She also holds a Master of Arts Degree from The College of New Jersey, and has extensive experience in professional and curriculum development. Dr. Vitella has served the district since 2007, and will continue to oversee Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment as Interim Superintendent.
 
The board also voted at the July meeting to retain the services of the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) in conducting a comprehensive Superintendent Search. This process will include community input. Please know that we will keep you posted via our district website and other communication methods as we move forward. Our superintendent’s role is critically important in guiding the education of all Mount Laurel children. We will remain diligent in our search for the candidate who best meets the needs of our community with your input and assistance.

If it's Summer, it must be time for Summer Reading Lists!

Mount Laurel's Summer Reading Program includes suggested books for students in Grade 1-7. Students are encouraged to create a log of books read for discussion in class in the Fall. Please recognize that your child may select a book that is not on the suggested list that fits his or her individual interests and reading level. Should you have questions about the Summer Reading Program, please contact your school office, which will be open throughout the summer. If your child has just completed Grades K-4, their final report card reflects a grade indicating their Instructional Level for Reading. This guide will help you to better understand where they should be at this time of the year for each particular grade.

Register New Students Early For Next Year - Forms Now Online!

Don’t wait until the end of summer to register new students! Classes are formed and bus routes developed throughout the summer. Late registrations impact class sizes and may result in transportation delays for your child.

So, if you are new to the area, or are registering a new student for the first time in Mount Laurel, please do so as soon as possible. Our Central Registration Office is open this summer at the Margaret L. Haynes Center at 354 Mount Laurel Road every Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That office will be open until September 10, at which time registration will return to the individual school offices. Please note that transportation services will be delayed by two days for any student registered on September 3 or later.

Eligible families can attain Internet service for $9.95 a month, and may even qualify for a low-cost computer. Interim Superintendent

Dr. Sharon Vitella

Dr. Sharon Vitella has been named Interim Superintendent of Schools in the wake of Dr. Antoinette Rath's retirement, effective September 1. Dr. Vitella holds a Doctorate Degree from Nova Southeastern University and a Master of Science from Gwynedd-Mercy College. She also holds a Master of Arts Degree from The College of New Jersey, and has extensive experience in professional and curriculum development. Dr. Vitella has served the district since 2007, and will continue to oversee Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment as Interim Superintendent. She will serve as Interim until a permanent replacement is named and seated.

To that end, the Board of Education has begun the Superintendent Search process. Details, including the outlets for staff and community input, will be forthcoming shortly.
