Welcome to Hillside Elementary!

Inspiring Potential. Enriching Futures.

Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald
Principal

Hillside School is home to 327 students in Grades Pre-K-4, and 50 staff members each school day.

In an effort to educate the "whole child," our staff has developed new techniques in meeting the special instructional needs of all students while building student self esteem. Pupil motivation, enrichment and appreciation of all cultures and the development of the full potential of critical thinking are areas of concentration for our staff members.

At the Hillside School, in addition to educational programming, emphasis is placed on social growth through community involvement and commitment. Some of the worthwhile projects included, collecting food for a local food bank and Toys for Tots, and contributing to the Ronald McDonald House.

Students: Register Now for the Get Fired Up For Literacy Contest!

As a way to promote reading, The Mount Laurel Fire Department and the Mount Laurel Library are excited to announce the sixth year of the Get Fired Up for Literacy program. This is a reading contest for all Mount Laurel public school students in grades 1-4. The contest will begin Saturday, December 21, 2014 and will end Sunday, January 4, 2015.

One student from each grade who reads the most minutes during this time period will be deemed a winner. There will be 4 winners per school and a total of 24 backpacks awarded as prizes throughout the Mount Laurel School District.

One grand prize winner will be randomly selected at each school from the pool of winners mentioned above. Each grand prize winner will receive a ride to school in a fire truck.

Finally, each student who participates and reads a minimum of 60 minutes will receive a certificate.

Note: Previous grand prize winners are not eligible for fire truck rides.

The grand prize winners will receive a telephone call from the Mount Laurel Fire Department prior to the results being posted on the Mount Laurel Fire Department’s website. The winners will be posted Monday, January 12, 2015, and the fire truck rides will be given the week of February 19, 2015.

To register: visit the Fire Department or Library websites OR simply complete the reading log here and return it to school no later than Monday, January 5, 2015.

Some helpful information from our school nurse

Each year at this time, we see an increase in absenteeism due to short-term illnesses such as colds and gastrointestinal virus. In the school setting, it is important not only that we track such illness, but also that we take every measure to prevent its spread. This letter from our School Nurse, Ms. Black, details some helpful hints to that end. Please make sure to stay in touch with her if your child becomes ill.

Unfortunately, It Is Also Flu Season ...
The Burlington County Health Department has observed an increase in reports of norovirus, commonly known as the “stomach flu”. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping and last for 24-48 hours. Norovirus is easily spread and can be a challenge to control in a school setting. Students will be sent home if they are experiencing symptoms. Students can return to school when their symptoms subside. However, they can remain contagious to others for several days. For this reason, strict adherence to handwashing and environmental cleaning polices is essential. Attached is a fact sheet on norovirus, and some handwashing guidelines that may provide helpful reminders.

Discussion centered on the transformation facing our schools, namely the new Common Core Standards, the new PARCC Test to be administered in 2015 and student attendance rates.
